West Newport is a real place and a special neighborhood in
Newport Beach, California that is still largely untouched by major development.
The heroes of West Newport Blues, Scotty Curtis and Bobby Rowels, reside in the
run down trailer park that contrasts starkly with the enormous wealth and
prosperity of Newport Beach. From here, Scotty and Bobby venture out into the
world through a maze of adventures that include epic bike rides, biggest
unsolved crime in USA high school pranks involving the theft of a dead body,
stolen Ferraris, dishonest adults and surprising mentors, grid iron glory, and,
of course, Homeric waves. But what is the meaning of these adventures and what
price glory?
Set in the seventies, Scotty tries to unravel these and
other questions. He is a seventeen-year-old surfer who dreams of being a writer
and the story is told through his eyes and words. Bobby is his best friend, the
football and surfing star of Newport Harbor High School. Together they take on
the world while Scotty finds himself falling in love for the first time with
Perry, the pretty little girl from next door who is harboring a dark secret.
The secret involves money and power and threatens to crush their love.
West Newport Blues is at once a profound story of love and
friendship while at the same time a story of finding the courage and
perseverance it takes to come of age in a world that could often care less.
Blues is a journey, a ride, a surf safari of the spirit as all the adventures
connect and lead us to the simple wisdom that our most important choice is who
we choose to love.
